Irsching Power Plant

The three red and white flues of the Irsching power plant are located directly on top of the grey boiler houses and can be seen from a distance. The station is located approximately 12 kilometers downstream of Ingolstadt on the premises of the scenic Dukedom Vohburg in the district of Irsching. During the construction of a refinery center on the outskirts of Ingolstadt, the Isar-Amperwerke company started operating a 151 megawatts heavy oil block in 1969 on the banks of the River Danube.

Continued expansion during the seventies

In 1972 and 1974, two other blocks, 2 and 3, with an output of 312 and 415 megawatts respectively were added. During the seventies the decision was made to upgrade the power plant for the use of low-emission burners and to use light fuel oil and natural gas as the source of fuel. Since the beginning of the nineties, the power plant has been operating exclusively on natural gas. In 1994, the Bayernwerk Company, which was located on the other bank of the River Danube, took over ownership of the power plant.

New start with E.ON Kraftwerke

In 2000 the plant and its subsidiary company Bayernwerk in Großmehring were finally merged with E.ON Kraftwerke GmbH with its headquarters in Hanover. Block 1 has been shut down since 2006, block 2 has been on cold stand-by since 1995, which means a substantial overhaul would be required before it could be put back into operation. Electricity is still being produced today in block 3 for covering peak loads. A total of some 140 employees are currently working for the Power Plant Group Ingolstadt/Irsching.
